As I sat on the slate trail in the garden this evening, I felt myself being blinked at. Someone was watching me. Looking around I found the little fellow in these photographs a few inches from my leg, dusty and holding very still, and blinking tiny black eyes. Just to be absurd, let's call him Picasso the Painted Turtle (naming the visitors to our yard is a tradition with me and my children.) Haiku carried him down to the edge of the pond where he can wash the dust from his shell.
Seven year old Sijo took the photo of the turtle in Haiku's hand. It is a bit blurry, but gives you a good idea of the size of this tiny turtle.

I've never saw that tiny of a turtle! He's so cute!
Thank you so much for the comment with tulip planting advice. I really appreciate it!
That is a really neat picture. The contrast of the tiny turtle against open palms is stunning. I wonder if he'll try once again to go to the butterfly garden.
Darcy, You're welcome for the tulip advice. I'll be back to visit your blog again! :)
Vicky, I'll pass your nice words about the photo on to my son. I like it too. I think the turtle may have just hatched recently. The butterfly garden is along the creek bank, so he may have just been climbing up from where he hatched. The creek goes dry (My Sometimes Brook, remember?) when summer arrives, so the pond is a better choice. Whether the turtle thinks so though, is another story!
Picasso is just adorable! What a lovely picture.
Rapunzel, I was glad the boys were in the garden with me at the time. One ran for Haiku and the camera, the other watched in wonder as the turtle tried to decide what was supposed to happen next! *grin*
What a nice little visitor! Very kind of you Haiku to give him a lift to the pond.
Grace, We saved a frog from a playful dog earlier in the day. All in a day's work I guess!
Adorable turtle and a great photo!
Katie, Thanks! There was another little turtle in the garden today. Haiku thinks he looked different than the first. I think a nest hatched in the creek bank. Who knows how many of those cuties are roaming around!
I just love it that you have turtles! What a wonder they are.
Nan, It's wonderful, isn't it? We have snappers and painteds here. The snappers aren't nearly as "cute" but they are fascinating, like living dinosaurs!
