Sunday Stroll - September Days

These bright pink znnia's stand at the head of each of our seven rows in the vegetable garden. Down the rows, weeds are vying with veggies for dominant growth, but vegetables are ripening anyway. Here is some broccoli that's so enthusiastic about growing, it has gotten ahead of the busy gardener (busy doing things outside the garden).

And here is some broccoli that is taking it's time. It will soon be roasted with olive oil and a few herbs and served on our table, if it doesn't end up blanched and in the freezer.

The first Brussels Sprouts will be sampled today, but this little cabbage will continue to grow for another week or two.

Watermelons and pumpkins are ripening on sprawling vines.

The ladybugs are enjoying the spikey silver leaves of the perennial artichokes, and the cucumber and green bean plants keep producing both flowers and vegetables.

The bright lights cosmos that I planted to fill in some empty patches in the garden rows are blooming, amid rampant wild mustard and a jungle of tomato plants that are producing an abundance of leaves, but few ripe tomatoes thus far.

I would have included a few more photos, and will perhaps share them over the next few days, but my dial-up connection is being particularly slow today. Where-ever you are, I hope your day is filled with bounty and abundance.

I noticed skippers all over the Autumn Joy sedum when I was out this morning.

wow aisling!! can I come for dinner for the next couple of weeks! Those veggies look so good to me and there's nothing like homegrown broccoli! I intend to try it next year when we get our boxes built over winter (fingers, toes crossed)

Mother Nature, How lovely. My Autumn Joy sedum is not quite in bloom. I'll have to watch it closely for skippers when it does. How nice to get a note from you today!

Linda, So many things are just best straight from the garden, aren't they? Come on over for dinner anytime! *grin*

Your vegetables look wonderful. I am longing to have a vegie garden again. I love your watermelons. I have never been able to get them to grow; I don't think we have enough water.

Kate, I hope you will be able to have a garden in your new home. Is it almost time to plant there? I wish I could share my watermelons!

Ruth, Thank you! We've been enjoying having a big vegetable garden for the first time in several years. I always have a few in my raised beds, but this year we put in a bigger garden. I can't quite keep up with them, but it's ok. We can give some away and let nature take care of the rest. Thank you for visiting. :)

Isn't it just the best, best thing to walk outdoors and get your own food?! After all these years, it is a little miracle to me. I do love those bright lights cosmos. They just go on and on and are so cheerful.

The one thing I miss about not owning our own home, is having a vegetable garden. Our twin home is perfect for us in every other way! But I think I found a vacant spot I can maybe rent for next summer, and hopefully plant a few veggies, especially tomatoes, green beans, zukes and cukes, and broccoli. Until then I'll have to rely on our local farmer's market......unless, of course, I come visit your garden and "borrow" a few fresh vegetables! Loved the garden tour. Thanks!

Mandie,

Thank you! I love it too, but with my schedule right now, the garden is getting a little ahead of me! :)

Nice to see you here!

city mouse,

Thank you. It seems to glow, doesn't it? I think the flash applied itself in that one, because I was looking under the large, shady pumpkin leaves. :)
