Poetry Thursday - This Autumn Day

I was pleased to find a few moments to take photos on this busy autumn day. This poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay expresses the deep joy that one can find in nature. Is this joy more poignant in Autumn, because we know that winter will soon be here? It's very late in the evening, but I have another load or two of laundry before I can go to bed, or some family members will have "nothing to wear" tomorrow! *grin* I'm tired and sleep is calling my name, but waiting for laundry has given me an opportunity to share a poem by a favorite poet. I hope you enjoy it!

God's World

O world, I cannot hold thee close enough!
Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!
Thy mists, that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag
And all but cry with colour! That gaunt crag
To crush! To lift the lean of that black bluff!
World, World, I cannot get thee close enough!

Long have I known a glory in it all,
But never knew I this;
Here such a passion is
As stretcheth me apart, -- Lord, I do fear
Thou'st made the world too beautiful this year;
My soul is all but out of me, -- let fall
No burning leaf; prithee, let no bird call. ~ by Edna St. Vincent Millay

Oh, isn't that just so beautiful, especially along with the pictures. Who is the woman in black? (doesn't that sound mysterious)

And what is a fiesta maple? I've never heard of it.

Nan, That mysterious woman in black is my daughter, Haiku. :)

The Fiesta Maple is a cultivar of maple that should have a variety of fall color on one tree. I think it is a fairly new introduction and I haven't found any photos of a full grown tree. Mine is quite small - not quite 5 feet and with two trunks because of a bad first winter when it died all the way to the ground. Nevertheless, the autumn leaves are so pretty!
